American Stars: Better Things To Do Than Play Monte Carlo
Sam Querrey’s surprise quarterfinal showing in Monte Carlo was the only showing by an American in the entire draw of this ATP Masters Series tournament. World No. 6 Andy Roddick, No. 8 James Blake, and No. 38 Mardy Fish did not play, despite the hefty $2.2 million Euros purse and bountiful ranking points available. What better things did they have to do this week than play this famous tournament on red clay beside the gorgeous cliffs of the Mediterranean near the South of France and Italy? Here is a look at hypothetical to-do lists:
Roddick
Rearrange bikini drawer for new fiancé Brooklyn Decker
Practice posing for his 2009 calendar
Let his bad haircut grow out
Wax his private jet
Watch tapes of his whipping of Paul-Henri Mathieu to seal the American Davis Cup earlier this month
Set new personal best score in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Manage his brother’s to-do list
Blake
Raise funds for that needy university that announcers remind us at least once a set that he attended
Watch tapes of his amazing comeback against Mathieu in Davis Cup where he was down two match points in the fifth set
Visit Barnes and Nobles stores and sneakily place copies of his book back on the front tables
Read the article about Anna Kournikova in last month’s Tennis magazine
Manage his brother’s to-do list
Fish
Watch Deal or No Deal reruns with his model/girlfriend Stacey Gardner and say, “You were great in this one.”
Start a new fashion line based on his own clothes catering to Key West bicycle cabbies
Watch tapes of his shocking win in March over Roger Federer in Indian Wells
Visit the Monte Carlo Casino in Las Vegas
Watch Sam Querrey pass him by in the rankings
