Roddick Rout Translates Au Revoir for French
Andy Roddick on Sunday played a nearly flawless match and Paul-Henri Mathieu played more like Pepé Le Pew as the U.S. sealed its victory over France in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
Roddick dominated the match from the fourth game on when he broke Mathieu, embarking on a streak in which he won 21 points in a row on his serve. The three-set match lasted only an hour and 37 minutes. Roddick hit 17 aces and his groundstrokes were solid and steady while Mathieu defaced the court with errors, a tired shadow of the player who was one point from beating James Blake on Friday.
Richard Gasquet played for France against Blake in the meaningless final match and seemed unbothered by the blisters that have been reported earlier in the week. Blake beat him 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 to give the U.S. a 4-1 team victory. Most of the crowd who stayed kept themselves awake by dancing to the Village People’s “YMCA” during changeovers.
The Americans will travel to Spain in late September to play the team led by world No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 5 David Ferrer on slow red clay. Andy and James should enjoy those shiny new Davis Cup championship rings while they can.
