The contingent of top American men are making their clay court season debut in the draw of this Masters Series event. Andy Roddick is seeded sixth and James Blake eighth. If Mardy Fish, the third of the three Americanos playing this week, can get past Frenchman Michael Llodra, he will play Roddick who has a bye into the second round.  Sam Querrey, who reached the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo, is not playing the tournament in Rome.
