Five Americans Roll On in Roland Garros
Wayne Odesnik is into the third round of the French Open, and four other Americans–James Blake, Mardy Fish, Robby Ginepri and Bobby Reynolds are waiting to play their second round matches. American losers in the first round are Sam Querrey who had the misfortune of playing Roger Federer first, and Vince Spadea, John Isner, Donald Young (who lost to Ginepri) and qualifier Scoville Jenkins. Batting .500 for the first round is a far sight better than the collective 0-9 compiled by the American contingent last year, especially considering the top-ranked American Andy Roddick is out with an injury.
Upcoming matches will be tougher, with Odesnik facing Novak Djokovic and Fish facing Lleyton Hewit; Reynolds and Blake are on a course to meet in the third round of the draw. Ginepri will face Igor Andreev, the big forehand-hitting Russian that knocked Roddick out in the first round of last year’s French Open.
