Ten American Men in French Open Tennis at Roland Garros

Last year’s contingent of American men toppled like bowling pins in the first round in Paris, a collective 0-9, but this year that won’t be the case. Seventh-seeded James Blake, the only seeded American since Andy Roddick pulled out with an injury, won his first round match Sunday in straight sets against German Rainer Schuettler.

Sam Querry, ranked 40th in the world after his quarterfinal success at Monte Carlo, has the bad fortune of meeting Roger Federer in the first round. He is the only American player in the draw to meet a seeded player in his first round match.

Americans Donald Young and Robby Ginepri, ranked 83 and 88 respectively, meet each other in their opening match.

Other Americans in the draw (and their rankings) are Mardy Fish (39), John Isner (82), Bobby Reynolds (104), Wayne Odesnik (106), Vince Spadea (112).

Scoville Jenkins (226) won his way into the tournament in the qualifying draw.
