Ginepri Bows Out in Paris, Awaits Olympic Invitation

Robby Ginepri ripped off the bandage taped around his right arm in the first set Monday, but he wasn’t able to pull off a win against the hard-hitting Chilean Fernando Gonzalez. Ginepri fell behind 4-0 in the in the first set tiebreaker, battled back to 4-4, but then lost three points in a row to surrender the breaker 7-4. Gonzalez broke Ginepri early in the second to win it 6-3, and then closed out the final set a lopsided 6-1. Gonzalez looked strong and showed no signs of wear from his five set match on Saturday, while Ginepri seemed to run out of gas.

With his run to the fourth round in Paris, Ginepri is on the cusp of being the third American player automatically invited to play for the U.S. in the Olympics in Bejing in August. Because both Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish have announced they will not go to China, Americans lined up are James Blake and Sam Querrey. The world’s top 56 players receive invitations, and when the rankings come out after the French Open concludes, Ginepri will move into the top 60 near the cutoff line. It also will make him the fifth-highest ranked American, leapfrogging Donald Young (whom he beat in the first round in Paris) and John Isner.
