Grand Slam Siblings?
With her win Thursday, Dinara Safina, younger sister of 2000 U.S. Open and 2005 Australian Open champion Marat Safin, could make family history and her brother with a Grand Slam cup on Saturday if she wins the French Open women’s finals.
While the Williams sisters are notable as same-sex siblings to each win Grand Slams (as well as together in doubles), I can find no evidence that there has ever been a brother-sister pair to each hold one of the major four championships, and Tennis Magazine’s Peter Bodo told me in an e-mail there hasn’t been one to the best of his knowledge. (If you know of one, please e-mail or add a comment .)
Marat, 28, and Dinara, 22, have never played mixed doubles together, according to an article about siblings on the Australian Open site. You’ve got to think a pairing of the feisty-but-lovable brother and sister would be fun to watch, and a great addition for the upcoming World Team Tennis league.
