Initial U.S. Open Field Includes Nine American Men

One-hundred and four of the 128 men who will compete in this year’s U.S. Open were announced Wednesday, including nine Americans. All of the bids were based on rankings: Americans who received direct entry into this year’s tournament are No. 6 Andy Roddick of Austin, Texas; No. 8 James Blake of Fairfield, Conn.; No. 41 Mardy Fish of Tampa, Fla.; No. 45 Sam Querrey of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; No. 64 Robby Ginepri of Kennesaw, Ga.; No. 88 Donald Young of Atlanta; No. 90 Bobby Reynolds of Acworth, Ga.; No. 94 Vince Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla.; and No. 96 John Isner of Tampa, Fla. Sixteen more men will qualify, and eight will receive wildcard bids from the USTA. The biggest American name missing on Wednesday’s list is Wayne Odesnik, a third-rounder at the French Open, who is ranked 104, one slot ahead of the cut-off point. However, because Dominik Hrbaty used a protected ranking (due to an injury appeal) the USTA cut off invitations at 103 to accommodate Hrbaty. However, it’s a good bet Odesnik will receive a wild card. Other possible wild cards for the American men are Jesse Levine, a Wimbledon qualifier ranked 121 and Robert Kendrick, ranked 123.
