While this blog almost exclusively writes about men’s tennis, I would be obscenely remiss to ignore the Wimbledon women’s final between Venus and Serena Williams. Much is made of the sisters’ overwhelming strength and speed, but anyone who has played competitive tennis knows there are many great athletes who are lightning quick and can hit the ball a ton but don’t have the heads to win. The fact that two sisters this for weekend are the best two women in the world — and that six times before they have met in the finals of Grand Slams — is truly remarkable. Their mental toughness and will to win is exceptional, and the coaching and guidance their father Richard Williams and their mother Oracene should not be ignored. One family member reaching the Wimbledon final is an incredible feat, not to mention two. As I write this, the sisters also are on track to reach the doubles final. Never have two siblings excelled at the game, and most likely, never will again.
