Weather Could Give Djokovic/Federer Winner Advantage in Final

The men’s singles semis are set to start today at 11, and with Tropical Storm Hanna moving in this afternoon, it’s very unlikely weather will be playable for the second match. In the almost certain case of rain, the semis (or what remains) and the women’s final will be played tomorrow, and then the men’s final at 5 p.m. Monday.

Federer and Djokovic are up first today, so if they can finish or go deep into their match before the rains arrive, it means they will get an extra day of rest while Nadal and Murray slug it out tomorrow to reach the final.

The U.S. Open has long had the unfortunate policy of playing the semis and finals on consecutive days, leading to a final with at least one and often two exhausted finalists. This year the situation might be even more lopsided. At the end of a long summer with obviously worn-out players, the Open should take and extra day and give us a final with rested players and their best, sharpest tennis.

Here is the weather advisory from usopen.org: Historically, match play for the first Men’s Semifinal begins at Noon in Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, due to impending inclement weather on Saturday, Sept. 6, the Men’s Singles Semifinals will begin promptly at 11 a.m., weather permitting.

In the event that the USTA is forced to cancel the Men’s Singles Semifinals (Session #24) and the Women’s Singles Final (Session #25) due to inclement weather on Saturday, Sept. 6, each session would be rescheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively. As a result, the Men’s Singles Final (Session #26) would be rescheduled for Monday at 5 p.m. Tickets for each of these sessions would be valid for the same session at its rescheduled date and time.
