The “Tomic Bomb” the Big Story in Melbourne
Forget that Federer, Djokovic and Roddick all take the court on the third day of the Australian Open, the premiere night match down under is the country’s next big tennis hope, 16-year-old Bernard Tomic. Tomic, bedecked in headband and sleek sunglasses, on Monday won his first Grand Slam match over world No. 73 Potito Starace by the dramatic score of 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6). Tomic now takes on Luxembourg’s journeyman Gilles Muller on the premiere match in the Rod Laver Arena. The Age newspaper lauded Tomic on its front page with the headline “Tomic bomb explodes onto the scene.”
U.S. tennis fans have no such young male players to rally around. Only four of the dozen American men in Melbourne survived the first round — Roddick, James Blake, Mardy Fish and Amer Delic — all of whom are a decade older than Tomic, who turned 16 last October. The youngest of American quartet is Roddick, who turns 27 in August.

I think you are right that Tomic is Australia’s next big hope. Hewitts best days are definately over and all the other young Aussies are taking on the ‘could be could be, may be may be roles. Tomic at least looks like he has some of the fight and controlled agression to claw his way to the top. Good luck to him. Jamie M.A.
