American Sweep Falls Shorts, But Still Best Weekend for American Tennis in Years

The Williams sisters did their par and ran roughshod over both of the women’s draws, but the Bryan brothers fell short in the Wimbledon doubles final yesterday, losing a very tight match.  In addition to Roddick, another American, Jordan Cox, is playing the boys singles final right now, and knotted 4-4 in the first set as I write this.

Even though the sweep didn’t come through, and regardless of Roddick’s result (and he just won the first set!), this has been the best weekend for American tennis in a very long time.  The last time an American man (Roddick, of course) reached a Grand Slam semifinal was the 2007 Australian and a final the 2006 U.S. Open — the last win was Roddick in the 2003 U.S. Open.  Are we about to see him do it again?
