The American Pig Trail that is the U.S. Open Series
The six stops on the ATP tour of the U.S. Open series include only two top-tier American cities: Los Angeles and Washington. But the rest of it is either second tier — Indianapolis and Cincinatti; fourth tier, New Haven; or not even the U.S., either Montreal and Toronto, depending on the year. Why can’t the USTA get tournaments in major-league cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco or Seattle? Compare in your mind the cities of Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and New Haven with the pre-French Open stops like Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, and Madrid. No wonder the game is more popular in other countries.
