Davis Cup Final — Nadal v. The Worm on Sunday the Match to See
The Czechs are in Spain for the Davis Cup final starting Friday, and I’m betting the first match on Sunday between Rafael Nadal and Radek Stepanek (aka “The Worm”) could be a humdinger, with a likely 2-1 lead for one team looking to close it out and the other looking to stay alive for a fifth and final match. It’s worth getting up at 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning, as those of us on the East Coast in the States will have to do. Stepanek is rearing to go, having beaten Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the semis despite being aced an all-time record 78 times, and could pull off the unthinkable of beating Nadal at home. I’m hoping that it will go to 2-2 (please spare us the dreaded dead rubber), and we can see Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer fight it out on the red clay of Barcelona for that huge hunk of silver.
The matches in the U.S. will be on the Tennis Channel, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, but an early wakeup call of 6 a.m. on Sunday. For those of you on European time, check the Davis Cup TV schedule here. Live scores for matches are also on Daviscup.com.
