I have at times poked a little fun at Andy Roddick here on these pages, and one of Topspinblog.com’s most popular posts remains the time I compared his April 2008 “faux-hawk” to the mohawk of Travis Bickle, Robert DeNiro’s deranged character in the movie Taxi Driver. In casual discussions with tennis friends, I’ve been critical of his volleys, of a shaky backhand, of a game with nothing more than howitzer-like serve, of his tendency to blow up and choke in big situations, of his Lacoste clothing contract. (Some of this comes from the jealousy that he was the son my mother never had.) But yesterday Andy Roddick played like a champion, coming back against Roger Federer, one of the greatest of all time, a player he was 2-18 against, on tennis’ biggest stage, with the icons all watching, fighting to 14-16 in the fifth. Congratulations, Andy, on a brave, fantastic match. Federer got the big trophy, but you earned everyone’s respect. And we are looking forward to more great play, once the hip is healed. Here is hoping that your late 20s and early 30s career will follow that of Andre Agassi who won four Grand Slams post age 28.
