OK, I don’t know if the ousted American players in America have hangovers down in Australia, but staying up to 3:45 a.m. Saturday with the John Isner marathon loss to Marn Cilic saddled me with one on this fiercely cold Philadelphia weekend. It was a fun match to watch up until Isner double-faulted twice in the fourth-set tiebreaker, and was fun again in the fifth set until he failed to win some break points, and finally lost the match.

I saw the video of his press conference last night, and the big man was taking it very, very hard. “It’s really disappointing. I didn’t want to go out in the Round of 32. It stinks. It’s going to be tough to sleep tonight.”

Although he didn’t lift up his head, he vowed to keep fighting, and you can bet the Georgia Bulldog will get some more big chances this year and will come through. As for Roddick, I didn’t see it, but the score against Wawrinka looked brutal (Roddick was out-aced 24 to 9). I think I’ll pass on the replay this afternoon. I saw this match in reverse when Roddick drubbed Wawrinka in the 2009 Davis Cup in Birmingham. That was the match that Federer bailed out on, throwing his country under the bus. Think about in the next round of interviews when he boasts of his Swiss pride when he plays fellow countryman Wawrinka.

All around it was a bad week for the Americans, but things look up for the Davis Cup draw. Next stop, Chile on the first weekend of March, and then most likely a date with Spain in the U.S. on a suped-up fast court where Roddick (who has committed to play this year) and Isner will have big chances. Also will be fun to see the Jim Courier-led team.

Compelling dynamics for the American men at this year’s U.S. Open, with Andy Roddick losing to Janko Tipsarevic (a match I thought would be tough for him when I first saw the draw) and qualifier 18-year-old Ryan Harrison upsetting No. 15 Ivan Ljubicic, a wily veteran and no easy win for Harrison. After a strong spring, it has been a very tough summer for Roddick, and he is now in desperate danger of falling out of the top ten for the year. At 28, it will be no easy feat for him to get back near the top. On the other hand, this could be the watershed for Harrison, a decade younger than Roddick.

Despite Roddick’s early departure, there are several Americans left who can go deep in New York, with Harrison as a new favorite, but also Mardy Fish, already into the third round. John Isner and Sam Querrey also moved on yesterday, and Isner looked good coming off a recent ankle injury. Hoping to see one or two of them left come Super Saturday, and after studying the draw, my money is Isner and maybe Fish reaching the semis. Querrey also has a chance. As much as I’d like to see Harrison, I doubt he has much of a chance to move past Nadal if he reaches the fourth round. And don’t forget James Blake, at 30, making perhaps his last run, but Djokovic looms as his third round opponent.

Red hot Mardy Fish and the almost forgotten James Blake are in the same quarter of the draw, both with favorable draws offering the likelihood of them moving on a few rounds.

After Andy Roddick’s heartbreaking loss last year to Roger Federer at Wimbledon, an anxious U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe visited the London house where Roddick’s camp mourned. He asked Roddick about playing in the U.S. team’s quarterfinal match with Croatia the next weekend, a grueling task on red clay. Roddick, “hemmed and hawed,” and McEnroe knew then that Roddick had “pretty much made up his mind not to play.”

McEnroe writes:

So I gave him an out, saying ‘You know it really looked like you tweaked your hip out there in that fourth set.’

Myerson (Roddick’s agent) immediately looked at me and silently mouthed the words: Thank you.

Given all Andy has done for Davis Cup, it was the least I could do.

Roddick’s announcement came the next day that he had a hip flexor injury and would miss the match with Croatia. This incident where McEnroe developed an injury excuse for his star is one of the more candid and surprising looks behind the scenes in McEnroe’s new book Hardcourt Confidential: Tales from Twenty Years in the Pro Tennis Trenches. Written with Tennis magazine’s Peter Bodo, McEnroe also delves into the Grand Slams, the USTA’s player development program, as well as his own career as a player, coach and broadcaster.

McEnroe at one point acknowledges the obvious conflict of interest he has of serving two masters – the USTA, as Davis Cup captain and head of the nation’s player development, and ESPN, where he fulfills the role of broadcaster. He also addresses a life lived partially in the shadow of his temperamental tennis legend sibling — the advantages (lots of wild cards when he was playing) and the disadvantages (the frequent “professional brother” accusation). The most interesting part of his relationship to John is the story of their match in the singles final at Chicago in 1991 that John won 6-4 in the third set, a match Patrick wasn’t as determined to win as his brother. “I just know I was thinking, Do I really want to win this? It would be such a hard pill for John to swallow.”

The final score on this book is that it is chock full of entertaining and well-crafted tennis stories, especially about life on the U.S. Davis Cup team, and the 2007 road to victory where the U.S. won its first cup in 12 years. For fans of Davis Cup, American tennis, the Grand Slams and the McEnroes, it’s a must read – a true tennis nut’s book, not simply a self-absorbed memoir.

This year thus far has been the breakout year for John Isner – winning his first ATP title, reaching the round of 16 in Australia, and making a heroic Davis Cup debut this weekend in which he played all three days, including a great effort as a last-minute sub in the doubles and a valiant five-set loss to world No. 2 Djokovic in the proud Serb’s hometown. Isner is at an all-time high in singles at 20, an awesome jump from March 2 a year ago when he had dropped all the way to No. 144. Ever since Pete Sampras retired and Andre Agassi’s back began to hurt, America’s hopes have ridden on Andy Roddick shoulders. Roddick won the U.S. Open in 2003 and has come close at Wimbledon, no more so than last summer when he had chances to knock off Federer, but has not produced another championship. With Roddick turning 28 this year, he might have a few more shots, but I think 24-year-old Isner is not our next best chance. With his humongous serve, he has a puncher’s chance, especially on the fast courts of U.S. Open (which the USTA should keep speeding up by the way, especially since Wimbledon and Australia’s surfaces have slowed in past years).

The obvious comparison to Isner is Ivo Karlovic, the 6-10, 230 pound Croatian (Isner is 6-9, 245 pounds). Both hit serves from a lofty trajectory, piling up aces, giving them a chance to push every set to a tiebreaker. Karlovic is 31, and still competing strong, ranked 29 in the world. His high was No. 14 two years ago. Isner, however, has more game than Karlovic. Isner’s forehand is big too, and he’s volleying better (and it was great to see him hold his own at the net in the doubles yesterday.) I think the key for him will be fitness and developing a better net game. For too long we’ve watched Roddick bang 130 mph serves and then stay on the baseline. Big John needs to keep at it in doubles and in singles get into net, where his wing span is wide and he can put the ball away.

There’s no doubt he can step in to fill the Davis Cup role long-occupied by Andy Roddick. I’m hoping one day we’ll see him hunker down and raise with long arms a Grand Slam trophy over his head, afterward donning a Georgia Bulldog cap for the press conference. With what he showed this weekend, fighting Djokovic tooth-and-nail on clay, I believe he can do it.

Today’s matches for the Americans see Donald Young against Lleyton Hewitt — this could be huge for Young, whose career has been on a downard spiral. Also, another American on the comeback trail, Taylor Dent, plays Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Because the two countries have never played, the home court advantage for Serbia was decided by a “drawing of lots.” You can be sure it will be slow red clay in the former Yugoslavia. Considering the tough matches the U.S. lost in nearby Croatia in July, you know it’s the last choice the U.S. would have wanted. The highlight match could be Andy Roddick and Djokovic, with the odds in the Serb’s favor on clay.

If the U.S. can get past Serbia, it will be assured of a second round home-court match against Croatia or Ecuador on July 9-11. You can be sure the U.S. would like to avenge its loss to the Croatians, the only team the U.S. has never beaten and has a losing record against.
