What’s Up with U.S. Davis Cup: Next Match March 2010

The U.S. Davis Cup team will find out their next opponent on September 23 when the draw for 2010 is conducted. Whom they play will determine where the match in the first weekend of March is played. Davis Cup matches alternate from home and away, regardless of the time passed since the last match between nations. If the U.S. plays a nation they have never played before, the “choice of ground” is decided by a drawing of lots. Here is the update sent out earlier tonight by Jeff Ryan of the USTA:

The U.S. Davis Cup Team suffered a Quarterfinal Round defeat to Croatia 3-2 at an away tie in Porec, Croatia in July. The loss ended Team USA’s 2009 Davis Cup campaign, and the Team will not compete again until the First Round of the 2010 competition scheduled for March 5 – 7, 2010.

The 2010 Davis Cup draw will take place Thursday, September 23, 2009, and will determine our First Round opponent as well as if the tie will be home or away. We will be in touch shortly afterwards with the results of the draw, and if applicable, an RFP to host the First Round tie.

Bryan Brothers Buy U.S. Another Day in Davis Cup in Croatia

The twins got an easy win over an overmatched Croatian team on Saturday, setting up the U.S. – Croatia match for meaningful tennis on Sunday. Up first will be James Blake against Marin Cilic, against whom Blake is 2-0, including a win this year in Australia. The fifth and hopefully deciding match will be Mardy Fish against “Dr. Ivo” Karlovic, against whom he is 1-4, although he won their last meeting in 2007. The U.S. needs to win both matches to break the Croatian curse.

Andy Roddick, who is out with an injury, is home watching, posting an occassional tweet about the matches.

With Roddick Out of Davis Cup, Fish Gets the Call

Andy Roddick’s marathon epic against Roger Federer left him with an ailing hip, forcing him out of this weekend’s Davis Cup match on red clay in Croatia. In his place will be his good friend and sometimes doubles partner Mardy Fish, who will fill the other singles along with James Blake, in the American team’s effort to beat the only nation in Davis Cup history against which the U.S. is winless (0-2) and has a losing record against.

Although there was some speculation earlier in Wimbledon by John McEnroe that Sam Querrey would make the team managed by Patrick McEnroe, Fish is the right choice with a higher ranking, a recent third round appearance at Wimbledon, and slightly better results on clay. He and Blake also reached the semis in Wimbledon in doubles.

All Hail Andy Roddick, An Apology

I have at times poked a little fun at Andy Roddick here on these pages, and one of Topspinblog.com’s most popular posts remains the time I compared his April 2008 “faux-hawk” to the mohawk of Travis Bickle, Robert DeNiro’s deranged character in the movie Taxi Driver. In casual discussions with tennis friends, I’ve been critical of his volleys, of a shaky backhand, of a game with nothing more than howitzer-like serve, of his tendency to blow up and choke in big situations, of his Lacoste clothing contract. (Some of this comes from the jealousy that he was the son my mother never had.) But yesterday Andy Roddick played like a champion, coming back against Roger Federer, one of the greatest of all time, a player he was 2-18 against, on tennis’ biggest stage, with the icons all watching, fighting to 14-16 in the fifth. Congratulations, Andy, on a brave, fantastic match. Federer got the big trophy, but you earned everyone’s respect. And we are looking forward to more great play, once the hip is healed. Here is hoping that your late 20s and early 30s career will follow that of Andre Agassi who won four Grand Slams post age 28.

Roddick a High Backhand Volley Away from Stopping Federer at Wimbledon

Andy Roddick was so close, the ball high above his shoulder but on his strings, an open court awaiting an angled backhand volley to give him a two sets-to-none lead over Roger Federer. I hate the dreaded high backhand volley, and apparently Roddick does too, missing the ball badly wide, and blowing the fourth of four set points in the tiebreaker. What could have been for Andy became what was for Federer: a 15th Grand Slam in a stunning five set match, more votes in the endless GOAT (greatest of all time) speculation, and unlimited opportunities to rake in the cash on more luxury ads. One crisp volley by Roddick to end the second set and it could have been different, although it’s of course very possible Federer could have come back and won in a fifth anyway, but I doubt it the way Roddick served. Andy can hold his head high and a classic match against someone who has beaten him 18 out of 20 times. He played a near-perfect match, but he needed to be perfect.

But Andy has something that Federer still does not, a Davis Cup championship for his country (Federer bailed on Switzerland in March, citing a “precautionary measure”). Federer’s credentials are still lacking when compared to Davis Cup feats of the other greats like Laver, Sampras, Budge and Tilden. I still refuse to put Federer ahead of Laver until he wins a calendar year Grand Slam. And don’t tell me the game was different back then, because no one other than Laver won a Grand Slam in that era either. Laver did it twice.

And while Federer next weekend will be putting his monogram on more household items and filming ads for products for the super rich, Roddick will be in Croatia, playing Davis Cup for the U.S.
