Nadal Beats Roddick on London Lawn; Blake Loses in Germany

Rafael Nadal beat Andy Roddick 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Artois Championships at the Queens Club on Saturday. Roddick said in Thursday’s press conference that although his shoulder feels good, his serve is not yet up to full speed. He told reporters he expects to be at full strength for Wimbledon.

American John Isner won his first round match earlier in the week but then lost his second round match to Nicolas Mahut of France.

In Germany, James Blake reached the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open, but lost to German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5.

Roddick Returns, Dispatches Ginepri and Fish in Wimbeldon Warmup

Andy Roddick returned to the ATP Tour this week, beating fellow Americans Robby Ginepri in three sets on Tuesday and Mardy Fish on Thursday to reach the quarters of the Artois Championships in London. Fish retired after losing the first set in a tiebreaker due to an ankle injury.

Roddick said of the shoulder injury that caused him to retire from the Italian Open in April: “My shoulder is getting there. To play three sets healthy is really big for me.”

The only other American remaining in the draw is John Isner. Isner beat Kevin Anderson 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Thursday. Anderson, a South African, played college tennis at the University of Illinois and is no stranger to Isner. Illinois lost in the 2007 NCAA team finals to the University of Georgia Bulldogs, a team led by Isner. This was the second time they’ve played on the ATP, with Anderson beating Isner earlier in the year in Las Vegas.
