Serena Wins, Takes Top Dollars

Congratulations are in order for Serena Williams for her Australian Open win, but also for becoming the highest-earning woman athlete in history.  She passed retired golfer Annika Sorenstam as the all-time career prize money leader in women’s sports, the WTA Tour announced on Friday. With Saturday’s win, Williams has earned more than $23 million in her career.

The Joy of the Australian (Insomniac) Open

It was a gray 6 degrees Fahrenheit (-14 celsius) one morning where I live in Philadelphia last week, a layer of ice coating the sidewalks outside my home, but I was warmed watching summertime tennis from Melbourne where players hide in the shade during changeovers and long points.  I love the Australian Open’s new year [...]

A-Rod vs. The Magician in Third Round

Much talk has been made of 36-year-old Fabrice Santoro starting to fade into twilight of his career, but the French magician has started 2009 strong.  He beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the first round of the Australian Open and upset No. 32 seed Philip Kohlschreiber in the second, outlasting the German player eleven years his junior in five sets.  Santoro now plays [...]

Querrey and Five More Americans Out; Roddick Rolls

Americans Bunched in Australian Open Draw; Roddick vs. Querrey in Round 3?

Six of the 12 American men playing the Australian Open are bunched in No. 3 seed-Novak Djokovic’s quarter of draw, including two of the three seeded Americans, No. 7 Andy Roddick and No. 23 Mardy Fish. Most intriguing is the strong possibility of a third round matchup between Roddick and unseeded Sam Querrey, who with a current ranking [...]

Nick Picks Federer, then Murray in Australian Open

I spent about four weeks at Nick Bollettieri’s tennis academy in Bradenton, Fla., in 1981-1982 over the Christmas holidays, when many of the real stars went elsewhere.  While I was there, most of his work was with Brian Gottfried, Jimmy Arias and Chip Hooper, but Nick ventured way out to my practice court one time [...]
