Croatian Curse Cemented Against U.S. in Davis Cup

There will be no Davis Cup matches in the states this fall. The Croatian team on Sunday continued its dominance of the U.S., winning the team quarterfinal match to go 3-0 all time against the Americans in Davis Cup. The Croats, who first played Davis Cup in 1993 after breaking off from Yugoslavia, remain the only team in the 108-year history of the competition to have a winning record against the U.S., and also the only team that the U.S. has never beaten. (The U.S. and Yugoslavia never met even though the Yugoslavians competing in Davis Cup from 1927-2003). This is the first time since 2005 that the U.S. team has not reached the Davis Cup semifinals, when they lost in the opening round to the Croatians in Los Angeles.
