Bryan Brothers Buy U.S. Another Day in Davis Cup in Croatia

The twins got an easy win over an overmatched Croatian team on Saturday, setting up the U.S. – Croatia match for meaningful tennis on Sunday. Up first will be James Blake against Marin Cilic, against whom Blake is 2-0, including a win this year in Australia. The fifth and hopefully deciding match will be Mardy Fish against “Dr. Ivo” Karlovic, against whom he is 1-4, although he won their last meeting in 2007. The U.S. needs to win both matches to break the Croatian curse.

Andy Roddick, who is out with an injury, is home watching, posting an occassional tweet about the matches.

The Croatian Curse Continues

Mardy Fish and James Blake came up short on Friday in Porec, Croatia, taking big leads in each of their singles matches but falling in five sets. The pressure is on to stop the Croatian Curse. Croatia is the only country in the 109-year history of Davis Cup that the U.S. has never beaten, and has an all-time losing record against of 0-2. The Croatians are one win away from going to the Davis Cup semifinals and knocking the Americans out of the 2009 competition.

Sizing Up U.S.-Croatia Davis Cup Singles Matches

Although he had disappointing matches in the French Open and Wimbledon, James Blake takes a solid past record against the Croatians into this weekend’s Davis Cup matches between the U.S. and Croatia. The draw will be pulled Thursday to determine the matches to be played indoors on red clay in Porec, Croatia starting Friday, but here’s an advance look at the history of the expected singles match ups:

Blake is 2-0 against Marin Cilic, the highest-ranked Croat. Both matches were on hard courts, including a straight set win against him in the fourth round of this year’s Australian Open.

Blake is 2-3 against Ivo Karlovic, but he won his last match against Karlovic, pulling out a three-set win on clay in Madrid this May. The only other matchup on clay Blake lost, going down in four sets in the first round of the 2007 French Open.

Mardy Fish is 0-1 against Cilic, losing to him on the hard courts of New Haven in 2008.

Fish is 1-4 against Karlovic, although Fish won the last time they played in 2007 in New Haven. They have never played on clay.
