Swiss and U.S. Even 1-1 in Birmingham Davis Cup

Stanislas Wawrinka beat James Blake Friday in four anemic sets, and Andy Roddick beat Marco Chiudinelli in three with an inspiring challenge by the Swiss fill-in for Roger Federer.  Fore more detail, read Peter Bodo of Tennis magazine at www.tennis.com.

Sizing Up the Swiss Davis Cup Team, Sans Federer

Roger Federer’s decision to skip this week’s Davis Cup match in Birmingham, Ala., between the Swiss and U.S. team is like Andy Roddick and James Blake preparing to play the circa ’90s Chicago Bulls only to learn that Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen are out.  Federer’s departure on what would have been essentially a two-man lineup leaves the Swiss with one quality [...]

Davis Cup Preview: Bama-Bound Swiss Dominant Against U.S.

In no other event is home court a bigger advantage than in Davis Cup.   The home team selects a surface suited to its team, and traditionally staid tennis fans all turn raucous in favor of the hosts.  When the U.S. and Switzerland square off in Birmingham, Ala., on March 6-8, the Americans would figure to be the [...]

Blake Misses Masters By One ATP Race Point

Rafael Nadal withdrew Monday from upcoming the Masters Cup in Shanghai, making Gilles Simon as the next choice to fill out the eight-man draw.  Simon’s advantage?  He had 356 ATP Race points to James Blake’s 355.
Blake’s web site seems hopeful that another player might withdraw so he could get the call to Shanghai.
Andy Roddick, who [...]

Roddick Qualifies for Shanghai; Blake Still Alive, Faces Federer Next

Andy Roddick skipped out on the trip to Beijing for the Olympics this summer, but he’ll be in Shanghai for the Masters Cup after his 6-3, 7-5 win over Gilles Simon in the PNB Paribas Masters in Paris on Thursday.  James Blake, who beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday still has a chance to [...]

American Tennis Needs a Great Spectacle: Make It Davis Cup 2009

Spain triumphed over the U.S. Davis Cup team last month in a historic Madrid bullring packed with more than 20,000 flag-waving fans — a Hemingwayesque scene that made for a fierce home-court advantage.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) needs to break out of its predictable Davis Cup hosting rut and also do something dramatic March 6-8 when Switzerland, and most likely Roger Federer, come calling in the first [...]

Blake Pulls Out of Davis Cup; Querrey, Not Fish, Named Replacement

James Blake has pulled out of the Davis Cup match against Spain in Madrid Sept. 19-21, and team Captain Patrick McEnroe has replaced him with Sam Querrey — not the higher ranked Mardy Fish.
“James is just physically and mentally exhausted after a grueling summer,” McEnroe said. “He said he needed a break and we [...]

The top four ranked Americans — No. 8 Andy Roddick, No. 9 James Blake, No. 35 Mardy Fish and No. 53 Sam Querrey — have reached the third round of the Open, leaving behind six compatriots who lost in the second round.
Collectively, the 19 American men who started the tournament are 14-15 in the Open, [...]

Roddick and Blake Hoping to Renew U.S. Open Glory

It has been five years since Andy Roddick cradled the U.S. Open cup during that short window between Sampras’ retirement and Federer’s rise. In fact, it has been five long years since any American man has won any Grand Slam.
It seems like long odds that Roddick or James Blake or any of the other [...]

Nineteen American Men To Take the Singles Court in U.S. Open

Three American men qualified for the U.S. Open this week, putting a total of 19 U.S. players into the men’s singles draw.
Qualifiers were Ryler De Heart, who won his final round in the qualies in a third-set tiebreaker, Ryan Sweeting and Robert Kendrick.  They join six American wildcards Brendan Evans, Scoville Jenkins, Amer Delic, Jesse [...]
