With Mardy Fish’s quarterfinal loss to Rafael Nadal, the American men completed a dismal 0-6 record in singles on the grass against Spanish players over the Wimbledon fortnight (fortnight being one of those words you only hear once a year when Wimbledon rolls around). Not exactly the confidence boost captain Jim Courier wanted going into the U.S. versus Spain Davis Cup quarterfinal starting July 8. But the American team has four things going for it:

The match is indoors, on a hard, fast court where the ball takes an honest bounce. No more of this muddled European soil.

Doubles is a critical point, and we have the number one team in the world, the Bryan brothers. By they way, they are in the semis and going for the win. (Someone should point this out to ESPN’s resident airhead Chris Fowler who endlessly recites the inaccuracy that there is only “one American man left in the draw.” )

The U.S. has never lost to Spain in the states, and holds a 5-4 record dating back to 1965. Roddick’s hometown crowd will give the U.S. team a boost. Texans know how to whoop it up.

And the big one — Rafael Nadal is taking the week off. However, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez (who beat Roddick in the third round of Wimbledon), and Fernando Verdasco (whom Roddick beat in a Wimledon warmup) are coming and will make for tough competition. Roddick and Fish, fresh off some big wins, will make up the U.S. team with the Bryans. Lineups were announced earlier this week. It’s too bad that Nadal won’t be there, but that’s par for the course in Davis Cup, where the real superstars often sit out.

He is the greatest.” It must feel good to have a .680 winning record against the GOAT.

Tennis history on the line this afternoon to see if Rafael Nadal can accomplish what Bjorn Borg never did — win in New York. Borg won six French Opens and five Wimbledons, kneeling down on the last one like he was giving thanks to the tennis gods above. But by September, those gods were frowning on him, knocking him down in the finals of four U.S. Opens. He practically disappeared, in fact, after losing in 1981 to McEnroe. Nadal, thus far in his career, has suffered from Borgitis. A win today vaults him ahead of Borg in the all-time great discussion.

The matches in the U.S. will be on the Tennis Channel, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, but an early wakeup call of 6 a.m. on Sunday. For those of you on European time, check the Davis Cup TV schedule here. Live scores for matches are also on Daviscup.com.

When Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal meet in Melbourne on Sunday, the endless discussion of the announcers will again turn to the debate of who is the GOAT — Greatest of All Time. Fitting, then, that the match will be played in Rod Laver Arena, named for the diminutive redhead with the powerful forearms and holder of the last true Grand Slam in the men’s tennis.

The Rocket won the Australian, French, Wimbledon and U.S. Open in 1969, the second year of the Open Era, repeating the Grand Slam he won in 1962 as an amateur. No man has won a calendar year Grand Slam since, and none have really even come close — Sampras, whose 14 individual Grand Slam record number of wins Federer can tie with a victory on Sunday, never even reached a French Open final. (The hoopla around Federer tying Sampras’ record is something of a sham since Laver, who won 11, missed 1963-1967 because he turned pro when only amateurs were allowed to compete in the slams.) Federer has reached the French final, but never won more than a set. In fact, only one modern player has won the career Grand Slam, with Andre Agassi the only post-Laver player to do so. But Laver won all four twice in the same year, and forty years ago he did it against all-comers – pros and amateurs alike.

To his credit, Laver is very gracious, saying that the game was not as good in his day as it is now. And three of the four slams then were played on grass and one on clay, unlike today’s mixture of two hard courts, one grass and one clay. But the fact is Laver did it, not once, but twice. Until Federer or Sampras or someone else comes along and lofts all four championship trophies in the same calendar year, Laver will stand alone.

I spent about four weeks at Nick Bollettieri’s tennis academy in Bradenton, Fla., in 1981-1982 over the Christmas holidays, when many of the real stars went elsewhere. While I was there, most of his work was with Brian Gottfried, Jimmy Arias and Chip Hooper, but Nick ventured way out to my practice court one time and saw me dump a forehand volley in the net. He told me to keep my racket head up, and kept going, his internal prediction I’m sure that I would not move past the middle of the pack in the Georgia juniors. He was right.

You can check out his picks on his blog to see if he is as prescient with the upcoming Australian Open as he was with my career. The most successful coach of all-time picks Federer to win, and Murray as a second choice.

As for me, I agree with Nick that Federer will probably win, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Murray lose before the quarters. I also bet that Nadal, coming back from a knee injury, will not go beyond the final eight. And I am hoping to see big Sam Querrey continue where he left off at the U.S. Open, and push a little deeper into the draw. Could this be the tall Californian’s year?
