			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ten of the <a href="http://www.topspinblog.com/2008/08/nineteen-american-men-to-take-the-court-in-us-open/" target="_blank">nineteen American men</a> in the singles draw have moved to the second round of the U.S. Open, including two qualifiers:    No. 259-ranked <a href="http://www.thetennishacker.com/2008/04/de-heart-has-great-tennis-mind.html" target="_blank">Ryler De Heart</a> won a five-set match against No. 68 Belgian Olivier Rochus, and <a href="http://www.atptennis.com/3/en/players/playerprofiles/default.asp?playersearch=Robert+Kendrick" target="_blank">No. 113 Robert Kendrick</a> (pictured), who at 28 had been passed over for a wild card bid for much lower ranked American players, beat No. 84 Frenchman Nicholas Mahut in four sets.  Ryan Sweeting was the only American qualifier to lose in the first round.</p>
<p>The six American wild cards did not fare so well, going 1-5 in the first round, with only Sam Warburg winning his match.  USTA-picked wild cards losing in the first round were Scoville Jenkins, Brendan Evans, Amer Delic, Jesse Levine and Austin Krajicek.</p>
<p>Of the nine players granted direct bids, Donald Young, John Isner and Vince Spadea lost, while six &#8212; Andy Roddick, James Blake, Mardy Fish, Robby Ginepri, Sam Querrey, and Wayne Odesnik won their first round.</p>
