Roddick’s Revenge as Djokovic Retires; Faces Federer Next

During a U.S. Open press conference last September, Andy Roddick ridiculed Novak Djokovic’s numerous calls to the trainer, suggesting that maybe he had SARS or the bird flu, but then he lost to the Serb in the quartefinals.  Djokovic didn’t get the joke, and was angry in the aftermatch interview and New York fans booed him off [...]

Querrey and Five More Americans Out; Roddick Rolls

Half of the dozen American men in the Australian Open draw fell on the opening day.  Of the nine Americans in action in the men’s singles, three, including a trimmed-down Andy Roddick and No. 23 seed Mardy Fish, won.  However, six players from the U.S. came up short, including Sam Querrey.  He lost in straight sets [...]

Six of the 12 American men playing the Australian Open are bunched in No. 3 seed-Novak Djokovic’s quarter of draw, including two of the three seeded Americans, No. 7 Andy Roddick and No. 23 Mardy Fish. Most intriguing is the strong possibility of a third round matchup between Roddick and unseeded Sam Querrey, who with a current ranking [...]

The much-heralded Davis Cup match against Switzerland in March will be in Alabama, the USTA announced Wednesday — not San Antonio, Texas, a site for which Andy Roddick’s family had lobbied. So instead of the 35,000 rowdy fans that could pack into the Alamadome, the setting will be much like that of recent home matches in Winston-Salem [...]

Five Reasons the USTA Should Choose San Antonio

The USTA next week soon will announce its decision for the location of the high-profile first round Davis Cup showdown with Roger Federer and Switzerland in the first weekend of March.  Contenders are reported to be San Antonio, Birmingham, Ala., and Greenville, S.C.  Here is why I think it should be in Texas:
