Has anyone noticed how much the roof over Centre Court resembles both the old and new stadiums of the Dallas Cowboys? I have four suggestions they can implement since they are following the lead of the self-proclaimed America’s team: 1) The grass in Southwest London is already looking brown on day five, so they should put down artificial turf that won’t wear out. 2) They could liven things up on the sideline with the British equivalent of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, the Sun’s Page 3 girls (might as well incorporate the streakers.) 3) Since there is so much talk about odds set by bookies, put in on-site gambling and a big digital tote board in Centre Court so patrons can bet during matches. The roof already has a Vegas-casino look. 4) Sell the naming rights. Wimbledon is dated. How about the Fish and Chips Open? Or the British Airways Battle Royale?

While the roof will be hailed by the incessant talking heads, it is just one in a series of bad moves for the pro game, a game that each year caters more and more to the top players, distancing them from the hoi polloi of players outside of the top ten.

However, when Roger Federer steps up for his much-anticipated coronation over the next two weeks, he will not have to worry about rain delays due to the roof. He also will not worry about bad calls since the premier courts all have the laser precise appeal system. When the roof is closed, he won’t even have to worry about wind or the sun in his eyes. Same goes for the hometown favorite Andy Murray (who, by the way, is my pick to win) who will almost certainly be slotted on Centre Court.
